The former Texas A&M Aggie had his biggest run of the night in the third quarter with the game tied as he exploded up in the middle untouched for a 40-yard score. The junior running back from New Orleans, also had two catches for 11 yards and accounted for eight of Nicholls’ 17 first downs. Special Teams Player of the Week: Lorran Fonseca – Sr. – Kicker – Hercules, Calif.Picking up right where he left off last season, Fonseca knocked in a pair of field goals in the Colonels’ season opener. After making good from 28 yards in the second quarter to tie the game, Fonseca came through in the clutch to even the score again with less than a minute remaining in regulation. Kansas had taken the lead at the five-minute mark and Nicholls answered by setting up a 43-yarder for the senior from Hercules, Calif. In just 13 career games for the Colonels, Fonseca has 20 field goals with nine going for 40 yards or longer. Junior running back Bussey picked up Offensive Player of the Week while junior defensive lineman Laiche secured defensive honors. Fonseca added another Special Teams Player of the Week award to his name after winning two in 2017. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted.
