Orlando PD Pulls Plug on Facial Recognition Program

first_imgA decision made by the Orlando, Florida Police Department appears to be a victory for privacy advocates. The city announced yesterday police have stopped using Amazon’s facial recognition program after 15 months of testing. But due to bandwidth problems the program never went live.Orlando says it will stop testing Amazon’s facial-recognition tool. The city wanted Rekognition to alert if anyone on a police watchlist passed one of their surveillance cameras, but they never made “any noticeable progress” https://t.co/SUJxJZk3W2— Drew Harwell (@drewharwell) July 18, 2019 The program was designed to find suspects by scanning public spaces with facial recognition software. The ACLU was among those who criticized the program, but Mayor Buddy Dyer says the decision not to pursue the program was based on a lack of resources. The technology is designed to automatically identify and track suspects in real-time using facial recognition algorithms.“At this time, the city was not able to dedicate the resources to the pilot to enable us to make any noticeable progress toward completing the needed configuration and testing,” Orlando’s Chief Administrative Office said in a memo to City Council, adding that the city has “no immediate plans regarding future pilots to explore this type of facial recognition technology.”The American Civil Liberties Union brought Orlando’s pilot with Amazon to light in May 2018, triggering nationwide pushback from civil rights groups concerned about privacy breaches, the technology’s potential for abuse and its tendency to misidentify dark-skinned women more frequently than white men. Plus there is still the uncertainty over whether the controversial face-scanning technology “actually works.”last_img read more

Whitby quartet pull off title double

first_img Tags: English Champion Club, Whitby Golf Club A quartet from Whitby Golf Club in Yorkshire pulled off a winning double when they successfully defended the English Club Team Championship.   Janet McGeehin, Siew Choon Tan, Bob Scott and Mike Coates scored 86 points in the final on the Bracken course at Woodhall Spa, the home of England Golf.  They finished three points ahead of the team from Enmore Park, Somerset, while third place went to Windlesham, Surrey, with 82 points.  “We all wanted to defend the title and I think our club will be delighted that we have achieved it,” said Janet. “We are all very pleased with the success.”  They had almost completed their round today when play was suspended because of lightning. “Three of us had teed off on the 18th when we had to stop. We waited an hour to finish the game sitting around and wondering if we’d be able to finish the game and if we’d be able to hit the ball properly when we went back out.  “We eventually scored five points on the hole – and we did need those points to win,” added Janet.  Will they defend again and try for their hat trick next year? “It would be nice but we haven’t had a chance to discuss it and I think we’ll have to consult on that!” said Janet.  In the year since they first won the championship both Bob and Siew Choon have reduced their handicaps.  The final was played as part of England Golf Week, a five-day festival which celebrates the handicap game. Car Thefts on the Rise Statewide, Residents Warned to Lock Vehicles

first_imgBy John BurtonFAIR HAVEN — Borough police are again advising residents to be sure to lock their cars and take their keys with them after a car was stolen this week and authorities report an upward trend in vehicle thefts.Det. Stephen Schneider said a 2013 Mercedes 2300 Class was stolen from a residence sometime late Thursday or early Friday.Following that incident, police sent both text and telephone messages to residents reminding them to secure their vehicles. There has been a trend – “a statewide problem, actually” – with high-end vehicles being stolen in the last couple of years, including Monmouth County, Schneider said. Many of the vehicles taken were unlocked, and many had key fobs left in them, as well, Schneider said. The fobs allow the owners to use a remote wireless entry system to open the door.Leaving the fobs in the cars allow car thieves to “drive right off,” Schneider said. “It’s a quick buck for them.”A number of communities around the county have seen a rise in stolen vehicles, though Fair Haven isn’t one of them. Prior to the theft of the Mercedes, the police had two reports of theft, about 1½ years ago – and both those owners had left the vehicles unlocked, Schneider said. The police department sent similar notices out before but decided to repeat it “to urge our residents so we don’t have an issue with it,” Schneider said.last_img read more

Unprecedented Quadruple Looms into View for Ruthless City

first_imgMANCHESTER, England (AP) — Schalke posted a GIF of two Power Rangers holding their heads in their hands, accompanied by the message: “MAKE IT STOP.”Another tweet popped up minutes later, this time from the goalkeeping coach of Manchester City’s next opponent, Swansea, who posted a photo of a TV screen showing Schalke trailing 7-0 at Etihad Stadium.“Scouting report nearly completed for Saturday’s FA Cup tie,” Adrian Tucker wrote , along with an emoji of a flushed face.City has its opponents bewildered and running scared amid a torrid run that has opened up the increasingly realistic prospect of an unprecedented quadruple of trophies this season. Please? (78′) #MCIS04 6-0 pic.twitter.com/OO7MsJP7nZ— FC Schalke 04 (@s04_en) March 12, 2019The thrashing of Schalke in the Champions League on Tuesday was City’s 18th win — one of which was a penalty-shootout victory in the English League Cup final — in 19 games in 2019. In that streak, City has scored 61 goals and conceded only eight. The players are on a mission and utterly ruthless. There’s no slowing up or preserving energy after rushing into a big lead, as shown against Schalke when City scored four times in the second half with progress to the quarterfinals already secured. Five goals came in the final 33 minutes of City’s 9-0 win over Burton Albion in the League Cup semifinals in January. The depth of City’s expensively assembled squad is starting to show, too. This time last year, City coach Pep Guardiola fielded a weakened lineup in the second leg of the last 16 against Basel — with qualification virtually assured from the first leg — and saw his team lose 2-1 at home, though they still advanced.Twelve months later, a team missing four or five regular first-teamers swatted aside Schalke, with center midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, versatile defender Danilo and winger Leroy Sane particularly impressive and taking the opportunity to show Guardiola that they deserve a starting spot in City’s strongest side.“They are the favorites, for me,” former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand said after the game. “In terms of depth, quality and the variations they possess, I think they’ve got the best squad.”Manchester City players celebrate after Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus scored his side’s seventh goal during the Champions League round of 16 second leg, soccer match between Manchester City and Schalke 04 at Etihad stadium in Manchester, England, Tuesday, March 12, 2019. (AP Photo/Dave Thompson)No English team has been this close to winning the main four trophies in one season. When Alex Ferguson’s Man United won the Premier League-FA Cup-Champions League treble in the 1998-99 season, it lost in the League Cup in December.City already has that title in the bag, is top of the Premier League by a point with eight games left, and plays second-division team Swansea in the FA Cup quarterfinals on Saturday. With Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and either Bayern Munich or Liverpool guaranteed to be out of the Champions League quarterfinals, the path to conquering Europe’s top competition for the first time is also becoming clearer — even if Guardiola has said City isn’t ready to make that leap.“Of course we will try to prove him wrong,” said Bernardo Silva, one of City’s scorers against Schalke. “We know it is a difficult competition, a special competition against the best teams in Europe, but we players will try to prove him wrong.”Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola drinks a water as he waits for the start of the Champions League round of 16 second leg, soccer match between Manchester City and Schalke 04 at Etihad stadium in Manchester, England, Tuesday, March 12, 2019. (AP Photo/Dave Thompson)With a little over two months left of the season, there is a maximum of 16 games remaining across all competitions for City. The schedule looks particularly fearsome in April, when City faces five Premier League games (including a trip to Old Trafford), a likely FA Cup semifinal match at Wembley Stadium, and possibly three Champions League games if the team reaches the semifinals. After years of big spending by City, Guardiola has the squad to cope with such a logjam but said after the Schalke game that it is essential none of his players return injured from the upcoming two-week break for international matches.“It is a huge risk to the players,” he said of the international break, “we need the players (fit) if we can compete until the end.”City is under intense scrutiny off the field. The Premier League and UEFA are currently investigating whether the club broke any rules regarding matters such as financial compliance, third-party ownership and the recruitment of youngsters, and FIFA is separately assessing whether City broke rules designed to protect youngsters from child trafficking when it signed youth-team players. City is also in the middle of an internal review into historic instances of sexual abuse at the club, which has led to it announcing Tuesday that a redress scheme has been set up to compensate victims .Perhaps more than ever, the spotlight will be on the club on the field, too, as City looks to make history under Guardiola.By: Steve Douglas, AP Sports WriterTweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more
