Man dies after fall into Washougal River

first_imgA California man died and his Vancouver friend was injured Monday morning after the two fell off a bridge and into the Washougal River, Skamania County officials said.Zachary Gallo, 27, of Citrus Heights, Calif., was found dead at the scene. Jeremy Patterson, 32, who jumped off the bridge in an effort to rescue his friend, was injured but refused medical treatment, according to a Skamania County Sheriff’s Office news bulletin.The situation surfaced at 3:25 a.m., when deputies responded to the area of Naked Falls, about three miles upstream from Dougan Falls, on the Washougal River. The men’s two friends, Eric Rakestraw, 28, of Grass Valley, Calif., and Michael Melnick, 25, of Vancouver, had called 911.That’s when deputies found Gallo. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.Deputies later learned that the four friends had been attending and working the Clark County Fair and left for Dougan Falls before the two California men were to leave for home later Monday.Alcohol may have been a factor, deputies said.last_img
