Cornell ranks NY counties on vulnerability to coronavirus, why health officials aren’t worried

first_imgNear the top of the list were Delaware County at number six and Broome County at number seven. “That is a pretty significant portion of our population that is over 80,” said Holochak. “So, we do know they are more at risk. They are part of the population we are putting most of our efforts in.” Following shortly down the lines of 62 counties, Chenango came in at 13 and Tioga at 30. (WBNG) — After Cornell University released a study of the most vulnerable counties in New York, 12 News caught up with local health officials on why some Southern Tier areas ranked so high. Meanwhile, Broome County Public Health Director, Rebecca Kaufman, says the county’s ranking is also due to the older population as well as people grouped in larger facilities such as nursing homes. She says in response to this and other data they are looking at, they have specifically been working with the county to assist the elderly population. “A lot of the group living facilities or senior living facilities will work with the emergency operations center in both planning and procurement of PPE,” said Kaufman.center_img More information on this study can be found on Cornell University’s website. Neighboring counties ranked lower on the list, such as Tompkins County at 52. Kylie Holochak from the Tioga County Health Department says she’s not alarmed by the ranking, adding that more than five percent of the county’s population is people over 80 years old. Holochak says in Tioga County, officials have seen an increase in family households, especially ones with three generations in one home. She advises anyone who tests positive and lives at home to isolate in a part of the home and dedicate a bathroom solely to the individual who is sick.last_img read more

Clayton Kershaw on track for return to LA Dodgers rotation

first_imgThe Dodgers will send Bud Norris, Brandon McCarthy and Kenta Maeda to the mound in Arizona this weekend. After an off day Monday, left-handers Scott Kazmir and Hyun-Jin Ryu are scheduled to start the first two games in Washington against the Nationals.Kershaw certainly appears on track to rejoin the rotation next Friday when the Dodgers open a series in St. Louis.“I think we all knew that Clayton was going to push the envelope,” Roberts said. “I don’t think we’ve figured out when that (first start) will be. … We’re just really encouraged right now with the direction it’s going ”Kershaw made his last start before going on the DL on June 26 in Pittsburgh and received an epidural injection in his back three days later.Rehab time Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error LOS ANGELES >> The Dodgers might have to go just one more time through their starting rotation before getting their ace back.Clayton Kershaw threw a bullpen session Wednesday, his second since going on the DL with a mild herniation of a disc in his lower back. That session lasted “upwards around 60 pitches,” according to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, and Kershaw will follow it up by throwing to hitters in a simulated-game setting on Saturday in Los Angeles.Roberts reiterated that it’s “unlikely” Kershaw will need to go on a minor-league injury-rehabilitation assignment before coming off the DL — leaving few boxes still to check off before his return to the Dodgers’ rotation.“We’ve got to get together and figure out what makes sense for us,” Roberts said. “I know the rotation the first time through is set. After that, then we have to assess where we go from there.”center_img Roberts said outfielder Joc Pederson will begin a minor-league injury-rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City this weekend.Pederson has been out with a bruised AC joint in his right shoulder since running into the outfield wall at Miller Park while making a catch on June 28.The plan is for Pederson to join the Dodgers and be activated for the series in Washington beginning Tuesday, Roberts said.More updatesRoberts was excited by what he saw during a 60-pitch bullpen session thrown by left-hander Brett Anderson at Dodger Stadium.“Electric might be a word,” Roberts said. “The velocity, the crispness of all his pitches, the depth of his sinker, the arm speed and mechanics.”Roberts said Anderson (returning from back surgery this spring) could start throwing to hitters “shortly” with a rehab assignment to follow.Left-hander Alex Wood (triceps) has already begun throwing to hitters in Arizona and could start a rehab assignment “sooner rather than later,” Roberts said. Right-hander Yimi Garcia (biceps) has finally begun throwing to hitters in Arizona as well, Roberts said, showing velocity at 93 mph on his fastball.Meanwhile, outfielder Andre Ethier was scheduled to have a bone scan on his right leg Thursday to gauge the healing in the fractured tibia that has sidelined him all season. If that scan shows sufficient healing, Roberts said, “then we can be a lot more active and aggressive” about his rehab activities. Ethier has begun taking batting practice but his running has been limited until the fractured leg is re-examined. last_img read more
